Using Ozonation to Reduce Ammoniacal Nitrogen in Mining effluent

The mining industry is relatively well regulated in terms of liquid waste disposal. Among the wide range of analyses that must be performed to meet parameters and standards, the trickiest and most restrictive criterion is undoubtedly toxicity.

Several metals can contribute to the toxicity of mining effluent. Effluent can be toxic even if the individual parameters of a sample meet the required standards. The synergistic effect of contaminants is often the cause.

Among the known contaminants contributing to the toxicity of mining effluents, non-ionized ammoniacal nitrogen is at the top of the list.
