The Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER) require acute lethality and sublethal toxicity tests to be conducted on the final effluent from mine sites. The species selected for these tests depend on the nature of the effluent and the environment into which the water is discharged. One scenario has remained a mystery: saline effluent discharged into the marine environment. In 2021, the copepod Acartia tonsa filled this regulatory gap.
